Leveling Up: Women Redefining Success in Cybersecurity
by Sabrina Sirianni on Mar 19, 2025 12:50:44 PM
As someone deeply immersed in the cybersecurity world, I'm constantly inspired by how this field is evolving. But what excites me even more? Seeing women not just stepping into cybersecurity, but absolutely dominating it!
Over the past few months, I've been reflecting on what it takes to break barriers in a traditionally male-dominated industry. I've had the privilege of meeting incredible women who aren't just earning a seat at the table- they're reshaping the game. It's time to highlight their success and inspire the next generation of female cybersecurity leaders...
Empathy: The Underrated Superpower in Security
Cybersecurity isn't just about firewalls and algorithms- it's about people. Understanding human behavior, motivations, and vulnerabilities is just as crucial as technical expertise. This is where empathy becomes a game-changer.
I've seen firsthand how women in security use empathy as a strategic advantage. Instead of viewing security as a roadblock, they position it as a partnership- helping organizations implement security measures without disrupting operations. This ability to balance protection with practicality is what sets great leaders apart.
Breaking Barriers: Women Leading the Way
Some of the most transformational leaders in cybersecurity today are women who have shattered expectations and taken on roles previously dominated by men. Here are a few who stand out:
• Theresa Payton – The first female White House CIO, she modernized IT infrastructure and built critical security frameworks.
• Rowena Patrao – As CTO of Scout24, she brings experience from Microsoft and Amazon to drive innovation and high-performing teams.
• Noopur Davis – As CISO at Comcast, she led a game-changing shift to DevSecOps, making security an integral part of operations.
• Deneen DeFiore – VP & CISO at United Airlines, she steered cybersecurity through the challenges of the COVID-19 era, helping to shape a more inclusive industry.
Women now hold 17% of Fortune 500 CISO positions, up from 14% in 2020—a shift driven by leaders like these.
Why Women Are Excelling in Cybersecurity
What makes women so successful in cybersecurity? Here are a few key reasons:
✔ Better Decision-Making – Studies show diverse teams make smarter choices, offering broader perspectives and more creative solutions.
✔ Level-Headed Leadership – In high-pressure situations, the ability to stay calm and strategic is invaluable. Women consistently thrive under stress.
✔ Collaboration & Communication – Security is a team effort, and women excel at fostering clear communication across all levels.
✔ Proven Resilience – Many women have had to work twice as hard to earn leadership roles, proving their expertise every step of the way.
Of course, challenges remain. Women still face exclusion at twice the rate of men and encounter systemic barriers in recruitment, hiring, and advancement. That's why mentorship, advocacy, and inclusive policies are essential.
Lifting as We Climb
The progress we've made is incredible, but there's more work to do. Supporting each other, mentoring young women, and pushing for diversity in cybersecurity isn't just important- it's necessary. Together, we're not just breaking barriers. We're redefining what success looks like.
Who are the women in cybersecurity who inspire you? Drop their names in the comments… I'd love to celebrate them!
